Eighteen years of building the field of Israel education: the people, the philosophy, the programs, and the impact.
How a Field Was Built
Eighteen years ago, Israel education was not yet a field. It was a class period, a unit, a song, a flag, a trip — a patchwork of extraordinary educators working without a shared language, a common framework, or a place to find one another. The iCenter was created to stitch it all together.
This document tells the story of what changed. It is the story of a relational, learner-centered, rigorous philosophy, and of the tens of thousands of educators who made it their own, reaching millions of learners across North America. It is the story of a field that grew beyond any single institution, and of an organization that met its goal.
As The iCenter closes its doors, the work continues forward by partners, alumni, and collaborators across the field it helped build. These pages honor that arc: how a field was built, what it became, and where the work lives now.
What's Inside
“It is the privilege of our careers to be leaving the field better than we found it.”
— From the Foreword, “A Letter to the Field”
The People: The educators, faculty, staff, funders, and partners who built the field, and the founding vision that set its direction.
The Philosophy & Programs: The frameworks, fellowships, convenings, curricula, and mifgashim that gave Israel education a shared language and craft.
The Impact & What Comes Next: What the field became — strong, professionalized, connected — and the organizations now stewarding the work forward.
